Can Skin Elasticity Improve With Oral Collagen?

In a human randomized controlled trial of 69 women aged 35-55, Proksch and colleagues tested two oral amounts of specific collagen peptides against placebo for 8 weeks. Skin elasticity was measured with a Cutometer. The collagen groups showed better elasticity readings than placebo, with the clearest signal in older participants.
A second human randomized controlled trial from the same research group enrolled 114 women aged 45-65 and focused on eye-area wrinkles. The trial reported lower wrinkle volume after 8 weeks versus placebo. A small biopsy subgroup also showed changes in dermal molecules involved in skin structure. That biopsy result is mechanism, not a visible outcome.
Asserin and colleagues reported randomized placebo-controlled human trials using oral collagen peptides and measured skin hydration and collagen-network-related outcomes. The studies suggested improvements in hydration and dermal measures, but the trial designs and endpoints differed, which makes clean comparison difficult.
A 2019 randomized placebo-controlled human trial by Bolke and colleagues tested a collagen-containing supplement in 72 women for 12 weeks. It reported improvements in hydration, elasticity, roughness, and density. Because the supplement contained more than collagen, the result cannot be assigned to collagen alone.
The Evidence Is Positive, But Narrow
The pattern is encouraging: several human trials point in the same direction for skin elasticity or related skin-aging measures. The pattern is also narrow: most trials were conducted in women, lasted 8 to 12 weeks, and were connected to companies with commercial interest in collagen ingredients.
A 2019 systematic review in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology summarized 11 studies and concluded that oral collagen supplements were generally associated with improved skin measures and few reported adverse events. Women were not an afterthought in this literature; they were the main population studied. The Proksch elasticity trial enrolled 69 women, and the wrinkle trial enrolled 114 women. Bolke’s trial enrolled 72 women.
That helps midlife relevance, but it leaves a different gap. Menopausal status was generally not reported in a way that lets readers separate premenopausal, perimenopausal, and postmenopausal responses. Hormone therapy use was not consistently accounted for. Results were not meaningfully compared with men because many trials enrolled women only.
So the evidence is women-forward, but not menopause-literate.
